After nearly four years since its last performance on Broadway, Mean Girls has finally made its way to the Savoy Theatre in London! As a huge fan of the show, I was beyond excited to see how it translated from Broadway to the West End. While both productions capture the heart and humor of the story, there are some noticeable differences between the two.
So, what's it like seeing Mean Girls in London? Is it still worth it? Keep reading to find out!
🎭 Shorter Runtime & Cut Songs
One of the biggest changes in the West End version is that it’s shorter, with some songs removed. While it feels a bit strange if you’ve been listening to the original songs for over four years, it’s not a huge disappointment. The tap dance break in Stop—a standout moment on Broadway—was cut in the West End production, along with Fearless. Despite these cuts, there’s still a nod to Fearless with a melody in the show, and Damian gets his tap moment too, this time during the bows at the end!
🎶 Lyric Changes
While iconic hits like World Burn and I See Stars remain unchanged, some of the lesser-known songs got a fresh twist. It Roars and Stupid With Love had some lyrical changes. Personally, I didn’t think they needed to do that, as those songs were already amazing on their own. But I understand the desire to make the West End show feel unique, rather than just a 100% remake of the Broadway production. Did it inject new energy into the show? Absolutely!
✨ Why Mean Girls Is So Special to Me
Mean Girls was my first-ever Broadway show, and it also gave me my first stage door experience. That night was unforgettable, and since then, the show has held a very special place in my heart. Seeing it again in the West End felt like coming full circle.
✨ Final Thoughts
Both productions were a blast, but each had its own charm. Broadway felt fuller with its original numbers, while the West End version brought some fresh takes that kept things exciting. If you're a fan, it’s definitely worth seeing both!
